So in Return of the Jedi we see a powerful Luke Skywalker who is very nearly a full-fledged Jedi Knight. The strongest evidence of his growth is the fact that he has built his own lightsaber. In a deleted scene we see him either completing or modifying it in a cave just before the droids depart for Jabba’s palace.
In the novelization of Jedi we learn that Luke returned to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s hut and it was there that he discovered a book which he used to properly construct a lightsaber. But the knowing how and having the components are two different things. The most critical part of constructing a lightsaber is the crystal.
The crystal also, by most sources, determines the color. So where the heck did Luke get a crystal on a mudball planet like Tatooine? Especially given how firmly the Empire kept stuff like that on lockdown.
What if Luke discovered something else at Ben Kenobi’s house? What if Luke discovered a lightsaber crystal? A green lightsaber crystal. Qui-Gon Jinn’s lightsaber crystal.
I know it’s just a theory, and the evidence could easily be dismissed as coincidental. I know George Lucas changed Luke’s lightsaber color from blue to green during production of Jedi to make it easier to see against the blue Tatooine sky. But still, I love the theory and it lends a kind of nice, subtle resonance with the prequel films.
