Avatar 2 Will Not Meet Star Wars Episode VIII in a “Battle at the Box Office”

Recently, it was reported that the Star Wars Episode VIII release date was being pushed back from May 2017 to December 2017 to the “grumbles” of anxious fans. December 2017 is also the release date of James Cameron’s Avatar 2…or, it was.

Empire Magazine is reporting that Cameron has delayed release of the sequel to his 2009 blockbuster.

It makes you wonder if Cameron’s decision to move the Avatar 2 release date out of December was due to the gargantuan success of The Force Awakens[which recently De-throned Avatar as the #1 domestic box office movie ever] and not wanting to put his sequel in a “head to head” match at the box office? Cameron and the studio are blaming the decision for the move on more time needed for developement,

“Expectations are going to be very high on these films,” said Cameron, “especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.”

So, the chance for fans to see two juggernaut films battle in a “box office cage match” is no more.
