At the recent SAG Awards, the beautiful Gwendoline Christie confirmed with People Magazine, “I will be in the next Star Wars movie.”
In a fun red carpet interview, Christie recalls finding out she was chosen for the role of Captain Phasma.
“I was very overexcited. I made no secret of the fact that I really campaigned for the part for a long time,” said Christie, “And then I was delighted when J.J. Abrams wanted to have me in the film and then wanted to cast me in this role that had originally been designed for a man.”
Since the first images of Christie’s The Force Awakens character, Captain Phasma, were revealed, fans were excited in the prospect of a female lead in a villain role. The excitement turned quickly to disappointment over the minimal time Phasma was actually on the screen. Fans started comparing the Phasma character and popularity to the original trilogy character, Boba Fett. The now infamous bounty hunter, Boba Fett had a total of 20 minutes on screen but became one of the all time fan favorites in the series.
Hopefully, Captain Phasma’s character will have more substance and a larger role in Episode VIII (I am sure she will). It would be terrible to waste such a talented and strong presence as Christie.
