John Boyega Adds Diversity to the Academy’s Class of 2016

With the recent Academy Awards lack of diversity controversy that continues to plague the iconic awards ceremony, the Oscar committee has taken steps to change its ailing reputation.

On Wednesday, the Oscars released a list of filmmakers invited to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Among the 683 new members invited was Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor, John Boyega.

The new invited members is the most diverse to date which includes 46% women and 41% people of color.

“We’re proud to welcome these new members to the Academy, and know they view this as an opportunity and not just an invitation, a mission and not just a membership,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, and saying that Hollywood needs to “open its doors wider, and create opportunities for anyone interested in working in this incredible and storied industry.”

On receiving the invitation, a proud Boyega took to social media to show his appreciation. “Always a blessing to be one of the many Oscar voters that will hopefully spark change.” Boyega Tweeted.

It has been a great year for Boyega, not only being recognized for his benefits to the Oscar committee but also in award wins and nominations. These include wins at the BAFTA Awards, Empire Awards UK, MTV Movie Awards, Nickelodeon Kids Choice, and nominations for the Saturn and Teen Choice Awards.

Mark Hamill, who is starring with Boyega in the next Star Wars installment, was quick to congratulate the young actor on his latest achievement. For those of you that don’t follow Hamill or Boyega on Twitter and don’t get the “Grape” reference, you can learn more here.

Congratulations to John Boyega on his continued success and contributions to the growth and diversity of Hollywood!
