GQ presented its 20th annual Men of the Year Awards in London, honoring the best in entertainment, fashion and pop culture.
But it was the last award of the evening that was most exciting as Mark Hamill won for “Icon of the Year”.
“I know what you want to ask. Do you have any advice on how we too can be icons?,” Hamill said in his acceptance, “It’s really rather simple. Step one, blow up a Death Star. You will gain the goodwill and deep gratitude of untold millions and it will last a lifetime.”
I share the same feelings as many about Mark Hamill. My fandom for Mark Hamill started as a child, when he first appeared on the big screen as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. After that, I wanted to “be Luke Skywalker when I grew up”…and to be honest, I still do! He is inspirational to me not only because of the amazing characters he plays or the memories they added to my own life throughout the years, but also because of who Mark Hamill is as a person off screen. For fans that follow his career in the news and on Twitter, Mark has proven to be a person committed to acts of kindness and charity. His willingness to be involved in political debate and protest. And finally, my favorite, his fun sense of humor!
It is safe to say that Mark Hamill has been an icon in my life and many around the world.
Congratulations to Mark Hamill – GQ’s Men of the Year 2017 ICON AWARD winner.
