Star Wars Menu: “Rey’s Savory Quarter-Portion” by Astrid Tuttle Winegar
Poor Rey has to work all day in the blistering Jakku sun, gathering junk to trade with the rather vile Unkar Plutt. Her haul one day netted her a “quarter-portion,” which she took home and hydrated for her supper. Her meal is merely nutritious, but not joyful.
Now…I know you’re thinking my photo doesn’t look EXACTLY like the film’s version. I’m using a microwave, fresh spinach, and cooking spray. (Get over it!) However, this is a very edible, savory little bread product, unlike the “polystarch” product produced in the film, which was apparently very UN-edible. It is weirdly sponge-like in texture, but strangely tasty and easy to make. Try it when you have a few leaves of spinach around.
“Rey’s Savory Quarter-Portion”
¼ cup buttermilk
6 fresh baby spinach leaves
¼ cup cake flour
1 tablespoon semolina flour
1 tablespoon dry Parmesan cheese
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon dry oregano
⅛ teaspoon salt
Coat a 12-ounce ceramic mug with cooking spray, or grease lightly (preferably use a mug that is slightly more open at the top, if you can). Combine the buttermilk and spinach in a small food processor or blender and pulse for 30-60 seconds. Add the remaining ingredients and process well. Pour into the prepared mug. Microwave 90 seconds. Let stand 10 seconds. Invert and eat while warm. Feel free to spread some butter on this, and serve with some soup or stew. Serves 1.
Or break out some Veg-Meat if you happen to have some lying around.
