Captain Carson Teva: New Republic Ranger

“There’s something dangerous happening out there. All these events, it’s not a coincidence. And by the time it becomes big enough for you to act, it’ll be too late.” – Carson Teva

Captain Carson Teva is a New Republic pilot who first appeared in The Mandalorian’s second season. He quickly became a key figure in the story, playing an important role in the battle against the remnants of the Empire and their dangerous experiments.

Teva is played by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee , a Canadian-Korean actor, best known as Mr. Kim in the CBC sitcom “Kim’s Convenience.” Born in South Korea, Lee immigrated to Canada with his family when he was six. He trained in theatre at the University of Toronto and has since worked in film, television, and theatre. Lee received critical acclaim for portraying Mr. Kim, a Korean-Canadian convenience store owner. He has been recognized with numerous awards for his performance, including the ACTRA Award for Outstanding Performance in a Continuing Leading Comedic Role. Recently, he was awarded the 2023 National Arts Centre Award by the Govenor General’s Performing Arts. Lee is now a central figure in season 3 of the Disney+ hit series, The Mandalorian. THIS IS THE WAY!

Who is Carson Teva?

Captain Teva is a member of the Adelphi Rangers, and as a member of the New Republic, he is dedicated to protecting the galaxy from those who seek to harm. You can see this from his first appearance in the series when he arrives on Nevarro to investigate rumors of Imperial activity. Despite encountering resistance from the locals and even the Mandalorian, Teva remained steadfast in his mission to uncover the truth.

Throughout the series, Teva demonstrates his courage and determination, taking on difficult assignments that put himself in harm’s way to protect others. We see this when he helps defend Din Djarin and Grogu (with Trapper Wolf) against ice spiders in season 2. Since then, he has shown respect for the Mandalorian culture and recognizes their important role in the galaxy.

As the series progresses, Teva becomes increasingly involved in the struggle against the remnants of the Empire. He worked closely with the Mandalorian and other allies to thwart their plans and bring them to justice. He even showed his instincts when he recruited Cara Dune to be a Marshal. Now, let’s hope he can do the same with Cobb Vanth!

Although dedicated to the rule of law, using his practical experience, Teva follows his “gut feeling” and can find himself at odds with the bureaucrats of the New Republic. We witnessed this in Chapter 21 when, after not getting back up to support Nevarro by Colonel Tuttle, he takes it upon himself to reach out to Din Djarin and the Mandalorians of his covet for help.

Captain Carson Teva is a fascinating and compelling character in The Mandalorian. He represents the best of what the (uncertain) New Republic stands for while also grappling with the difficulties of a galaxy still recovering from the oppression of the Empire. As a fan of the character and actor (me being a proud Canadian), I eagerly anticipate his next appearance and his important role in the ongoing battle to bring order to the New Republic.
